about

Our desire to play music together was only matched by the desire to play it loudly. And in the spring of 2016, my 16-year-old nephew and I did just that. The results from this jam session was a desire to do more of the same, followed by the impetus to write and record music. My dad said we could be loud in their basement, and then asked if he could play along on his bass. (He hadn't touched it in 12 years, but he still knew his way around pretty well!)

So the family band was born, but then summer hit. Vacations, summer camps and dipnetting conspired to keep us from practicing as a whole, so we switched gears and decided that recording in pieces was the best way to work out the new songs.

We are definitely not reinventing any wheels here, but the truth is that rock and roll is super fun. We had a blast. And it makes me happy to listen to the finished album and hear the influence of many of my favorite bands. (Green Day, King’s X, The Promise Ring, Jawbreaker, Sunny Day Real Estate, along with a certain Swedish prog-rock band called Jerusalem. There’s even a track that kind of reminds me of AC/DC, although I’m not sure how that happened.)

So our debut album is done, but we can’t really do any shows yet. Micah turned 17 and is now entering a very busy senior year of high school. I’m going back to work after a summer off, and then there’s all the hunting trips. Band practice will have to wait a little bit until things calm down. We are optimistically eyeing dad’s 70th birthday near Thanksgiving as a potential live concert debut. So until then, the only way to experience The Cryptic Fishermen is with this little bundle of fun. Enjoy.
